What Makes a Book Popular?
by Alexis V.
Why are some books so popular and others unknown? Well, I went on a journey to find out why, and here's what I found!
First, let's look at some popular books: Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, A Court of Thorns and Roses, and Percy Jackson are all very popular among teens and have lots of readers and fans. All of these books are fantasy; fantasy is a book genre that uses magic, supernatural elements, and imaginary worlds that violate the natural and physical rules of the real world, so that is probably a big driver for teens to read. These books also all include a hero's journey, which is when the main character goes on an adventure to overcome a crisis. Plus, they all have romance. Teens also like when authors don't sugarcoat things.
Some basic things that people also need to make a good book are good grammar, an overarching message, a good and not too basic plot, relatable aspects and characters, and a book that isn't too cliché and can't be easily forgotten. Also, some books can have all of these but still not make it to fandom because some writers don't have the resources to push their book to the public or even get it published.
I also asked some people in my journalism class what they like in a book; here are some answers: ‘’If it has a tragic love story’’, “If it's not all about romance”, “Good pacing”, and last but not least, “A good storyline”. From all of these, we can see that each one has its own preface, but they all have something in common: all of these belong to fantasy. Just remember that every one has its own predilection, and that publishing is subjective.
