Washington D.C. Trip
by Adan B.
This spring break, April 4-8, the eighth-grade learners will have the opportunity to participate in an exciting educational trip to Washington, D.C. Organized in partnership with Close Up, the trip will provide learners with a hands-on opportunity to explore government, history, and civic responsibility in one of the world’s most dynamic cities
Close Up staff will use Washington’s key institutions and historic sites as interactive classrooms. Through these experiences, learners will connect what they studied in class to important historical events, government institutions, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens today.
During the trip, learners will visit several historic and significant locations, including the National Mall, Arlington National Cemetery, and the Thomas Jefferson Memorial. They will also take a day trip to Philadelphia, where they will visit historical sites and enjoy cheesesteaks and dinner. Possible destinations in Philadelphia include the National Constitution Center, the Old Printing Press, and the Liberty Bell.
The trip was organized to give learners a unique opportunity to travel out of state with their classmates and visit places they have studied in the classroom. In addition to the educational benefits, the experience will allow learners to build relationships, make lasting memories, and experience history firsthand.
Participants will travel by plane and stay in a hotel throughout the trip. The total cost is $2,390 per learner, which includes airfare, lodging, meals, and transportation. Although meals are included in the trip cost, Learners may bring additional money if they would like to purchase snacks or souvenirs. Each learner should also bring their school ID. There are no eligibility requirements beyond a family’s ability to meet the financial commitment. All eighth-grade learners are eligible to participate.
Learners should pack one travel outfit for the trip to and from Washington, D.C., five daytime outfits, two evening outfit options, and one optional semi-formal outfit for Capitol Hill Day. Comfortable shoes, pajamas, a jacket or sweatshirt, and toiletries are also recommended.
This trip promises to be a fast-paced, fun-filled, and educational experience. By visiting important historical sites and engaging directly with the nation’s history and government, our eighth graders will gain a deeper understanding of the lessons they have learned in class and the role they can play as citizens in their communities.
